The Capability Approach and the Importance of Capabilities and Opportunities
Another key influence on Creative Utilitarianism is the Capability Approach, developed by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum. The Capability Approach focuses on the capabilities and opportunities that individuals have to lead flourishing lives (Sen, 1999; Nussbaum, 2011).
According to the Capability Approach, well-being is not just about the possession of material goods and resources, but also about the ability to lead a fulfilling life. This means that individuals need to have access to a range of capabilities and opportunities, such as education, health care, and political participation, in order to live flourishing lives.
The Capability Approach therefore emphasizes the importance of empowering individuals and communities to have greater control over their own lives. It argues that individuals should not be judged solely on the basis of their income or wealth, but on the basis of their capabilities and opportunities.
This emphasis on capabilities and opportunities is an important aspect of Creative Utilitarianism, which also focuses on the ability of individuals to create and control the conditions of their own lives. Creative Utilitarianism recognizes that individuals need to have access to a range of capabilities and opportunities in order to lead flourishing lives, and seeks to promote these capabilities and opportunities through collective action and collaboration.
